From the registry's own Clones – Tribute – Fakes page

Real, clone, or tribute?

The registry's answer is one question long: ask for the door tag number — or ask to see it. Everything else on this page is what happened to people who didn't.

This page is the source registry's own authentication guidance, carried over verbatim where it speaks for itself. An earlier draft of this page described dash plaques, shock brands and axle conversions from third-party write-ups. The registry never said any of that, so it is gone.

How do I know if a GMMG is real or not?

Ask for the door tag # (or ask to see it)
Contact for verification … (Need Model/Car #/color/door tag #)

That is the whole test, and it is the test because the registry holds the records behind it. Send the model, car number, colour and door tag number through the contact form and the VIN can be checked against them. The door tag is the thing a clone cannot produce — which is why, in every account below, the moment somebody asks to see it the story changes.

Before you send money

  • Ask for the door tag number. Then ask to see the tag itself, photographed in the car.
  • Send the model, car number, colour and door tag number to the registry for a VIN check.
  • If the seller has "all kinds of excuses" instead of a tag, you already have your answer.
  • Send photos and information on any fake, clone or tribute you come across — the page below exists because owners sent them in.

A fake ZL-1, called out twice

August 20, 2016… DJ saw this fake ZL1 @ the Blanchardville, WI Car Show. The guy is from Sauk City, WI & is still trying to pass this car off as a GMMG. It is a fake – impersonator! I saw the same car @ Newton, Iowa on the 2010 Power Tour & called him out on it as a fake as he told me it was a GMMG ZL1. As soon as I asked to see the brass door tag he had all kind of excuses. Just tell it like it is & doesn't try & BS anyone. — Jim

A car that is not SS #70

I saw this car on the 2010 HRPT in Newton Iowa. At first, it appears to be an SS but it's not. #70 is on the windshield – '427' numbers are too big – 600hp on the hood – 'In memory…' like ZL-1's on trunk. This is NOT a Berger SS or ZL-1! It's a total fake that the owner continues to try & pass off as a real GMMG.

The registry's note on the photo is blunter still: NOT SS #70 – it's a fake – #70 SS is NBM. The real car's colour is on file. That is what a registry is for.

And a tribute whose owner says so himself

Not every car on this page is a problem. The registry keeps the ones whose owners are straight about what they have, because that is the behaviour it wants:

My car is not a GMMG car … my car was upgraded with OEM GMMG parts back in 2003 by GMMG. They uplifted several cars for friends; all non numbered, not to deter from GMMG owners. — the owner of a car that could appear to be a real Tom Henry, 6/15/10, while selling it

His list of genuine GMMG parts runs to a dozen items — rear panel, metal emblem, Tom Henry dash plate, carbon fibre air lid, chambered exhaust, ZL-1 grille. Every one of them is real. The car still is not a GMMG. Parts do not make the car; the door tag and the records do.

Not BB #21

This is NOT BB #21 – #21 was black & totalled.

The registry knows the real #21 is gone because its owner wrote in and said what happened to it — a borrowed burnout, a cliff, and an insurance settlement larger than the purchase price. A registry that tracks the cars that were destroyed can tell you when a car in front of you cannot be the one it claims to be.

Send what you find

The registry asks for photos and information on fake, clone and tribute GMMG cars, and for your view on them: "There are some wanting you to believe their car is the 'real deal' when it is not & others are up front right away. How do you feel about tribute, clone & fake GMMG's?" Use the contact form.
